Landrias at FLL World Festival 2011

What could be a better way to attend the 2011 FIRST LEGO League World Festival than being “Team #1 Friends of FIRST”?

Landrias #1017 was selected as the World Festival stand-in team at St. Louis. We rushed to put our robot back together 3 weeks prior to the WF, zipped it up in a suitcase and hope for the best. While at the World Festival, we were also busy cheering for our big brother team, the Landroids #4220, who was competing at the FTC World Championship.  Since one of our team member is also on the Landroids, running back and forth between FLL and FTC was really challenging and exciting.  Even though we were Team #1, our robot scores were far from being #1, but our experience and fun level were definitely #1!

Landrias in FLL Global Innovate Award Competition

A late post to report our final result at the NJ FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Championship held on December 11, 2010. Our team won the 3rd place Robot Design award, and ranked 14 overall out of 44 teams.

After a bit of rest and quiet time, we decided to submit our “Asthma Alert” project to the FLL Global Innovate Award Competition on 2/26/11. Our team had worked really hard on this project and felt that it deserve to be noticed and share with others.  The winning team of this award could get $20,000 toward patenting their ideas.  Unfortunately, the competition had started on 1/19/11, so we are more than a month behind in collecting votes, which is limited to one vote per day per IP address (of the phone or computer).  The deadline has now been extended to March 18, 2011, 5 PM.

Please support our team by voting for us!  Thanks!

Landrias won Bergen Champion’s & 2nd Place Robot Performance

DSC_1178

What an exciting day at the NJ FLL Bergen qualifying event this past Saturday,11/20/10! Landrias won the Champion’s Award and 2nd place Robot Performance at the NJ Bergen FLL Qualifying event!

We had put in countless hours in researching our project, rehearsing our script and made our props. A week before the QT, we finally were able to start combining our programs from 3 different programmers, and tweaked the programs up to the night before, which means that there was little time to practice our robot rounds.

At the morning practice round, a referee reminded us of a Q&A ruling, which sent us scrambling to on-the-spot robot modification and reprogramming the missions.  Since each judging session were 40 minutes to an hour apart, it was iron-coding for a couple minutes, ran the robot once or twice, then made a mad dash for the judging rooms.  Our coach and team parents had to bring us lunch to inhale in the hallway while we waited for our judging session.

In the afternoon, between each match, we continued to refine the programs, holding onto the top 3 places on the score board, improving our score each time. Finally, we decided to ditch an unreliable mission in the third round, restructured the programs, and it earned us the highest score of the day…290 with 22 seconds to spare!

Since our matches ended early, the whole team ran outside to get some fresh air.  We were so happy that the tournament was over, knowing that we have done our best, it was a good feeling.  There were a lot of new teams came up to us to ask for Landrias’ contact information for mentorship.

The closing ceremony started with group dancing, led by the Pascack Hills High School FRC team, it was the best fun ever!  There were a total of four all-girls teams at this 27 team event, which was very encouraging to see. Exit 5 Robotics, the rookie 4th grade all-girls teams from our Livingston Robotics Club took the 1st place Robot Performance with a top score of 315 of the day!

That night, after a nice and relaxing team dinner with our coaches and parents, the whole team went to see Harry Potter 7. It was a long but fun day!

Landrias hosted FLL Exhibition at RoboFest 10/23/10

Team Landrias hosted a FIRST LEGO League exhibition as a community outreach effort on Saturday October 23, 2010 at the NJ RoboFest at Clifton High School as part of the NJ Science and Engineering Festival. We exhibited our “Body Forward” research findings and product design to help asthma patients to live a better life. We also demonstrated the robot design and NXT-G programs to complete some of the “Body Forward” robot missions related to the theme of Biomedical Engineering.

During the exhibition, our team members explained what FLL is all about to the many children and parents who visited our booth, generated lots of interests in FLL and inquires on how to participate or start a team. With approximately 4,000 visitors came by on that day, we polished our public speaking skills, demonstrated our enthusiam about science and technology, and served as an FLL ambassador to the general public. It was a long day, but hopefully, this wonderful community outreach opportunity planted new seeds in some of the curious children and parents and promoted the visions of the FIRST.

Landrias starts up “Body Forward”

Landrias visit lab 091010a

This weekend, Landrias kicked off the FLL “Body Forward” season with a visit to the BioReference Lab on 9/10/10. Dr. Meredith (the Director of MicroArray) took us for a tour of the lab. We learned about hybridization, DNA, and more about genetics.

Most of our members have been out of the country during the summer, and just got back in time for the start of the new school year. Our team had a late start with FLL this season, but all of us are excited to learn about biomedical engineering and brainstorming a research topic, plus designing a brand new robot for this year’s challenge. It is so much fun to hang out together again on the weekends.

LRC Jr. FLL Expo, 5/29/10

Livingston Robotics Club hosted the Junior FIRST LEGO League (Jr.FLL) Expo on May 29, 2010 during the Youth Appreciation Week in Livingston, New Jersey. In addition, Livingston teams from the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) and FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), along with college robotics and engineering programs and a NASA Engineer, joined the exhibition.

The Expo was to cerebrate the end of the “Smart Move” season and to encourage new participants for the upcoming “Body Forward” season

Prior to the exhibition day, Landrias worked on the preparing the “Imagine Mars” exhibition by building a model of the Curiosity rover on a simulated surface of Mars.

Imagine Mars is a project sponsored by NASA and the National Endowment for the Arts to encourage students to learn more about the Mars exploration and use their creativity to express their ideas through works of art. We set it up in the morning, to present children with 3D images from Mars rovers, sample of Mars soil stimulant, the generated sound of the Spirit rover during its mission on Mars.  Children created their artwork to design a transportation system of a futuristic community on Mars, and we hung them up for all to see.  Our team also displayed our Smart Move “Got Bikes” project, and we brought in different NXT robots for visitors to play with.

In the afternoon, we became the Jr. FLL judges.  We listened to five different teams’ presentation, had our deliberation with team Landroids, and be the presenters of the awards.  It was fun listening to the youngsters.

After the Expo, our team helped out the Livingston town police at the Bike Expo.  The police set up multiple stations to check for bike safety, helmet fitting, and bike safety.  This is in line with our “Got Bike” project, which we have been presenting to the town council and many town officials.  It is nice to see that bike safety awareness is growing in our town and that is the goal of our FLL research project.

See the official LRC Jr.FLL Expo site.

Monty Madness & PAVE visit, 5/15/10

On May 15th, Landrias participated in NJ FIRST LEGO League (FLL) outreach activity at Monty Madness to inspire young children to take part in the next FLL season, “Body Forward”.  Landrias presented their “Smart Move” Got Bike project boards, and had several friendly robot rounds with Landroids and Atoms Family. The challenge was if we ever beat our big brother team Landroids, the boys were to wear the signature Landrias flowers on their heads.  So far, we are still trying….  See our robot round video with the Landroids.

Landrias also stopped by at Princeton University to meet Princeton Autonomous Vehicle Engineering (PAVE) team to invite them to the Junior FIRST LEGO League (Jr.FLL) Expo organized by Livingston Robotics Club which will be held on May 29th. Roland Hwang who heads up event logistic for PAVE gave us a tour of their garage. We saw two of their Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition (IGVC) robots and got a chance to get in their latest driverless car, Prospect Twelve. PAVE plans to adjust the Prospect Twelve to be able to pass the same standard as in New Jersey driver license test. PAVE confirmed with our team that they will bring Prospect Twelve to the Jr.FLL Expo. This will be one of the activities in the Expo which Landrias has helped organizing and our team will be volunteering on the day of the event. The Expo is expected to inspire many children to be engaged in Jr.FLL and FLL in the “Body Forward” season.

Eco Fair Project Presentation 10/4/09

Landrias presented their Smart Move projects along with the big brother team, Landroids, to the community as a part of the October 4, 2009 Livingston Eco Fair exhibition. At this town-wide event, the teams showcased their past and present research projects, demonstrated that the FIRST LEGO League is not just about building robots.

For weeks, Landrias has been working hard on our research projects.  First was to develop a broad base understanding in various types, modes and constraints of transportation, then brainstorm new topics each week for further research, leading to a short list of transportation problems, then finally zoom in on the topics that most affecting our immediate community.  Our team worked on the weekends to gathered statistics, facts, field data, survey poll, and compiled preliminary solutions on the presentation boards. Base on visitors’ feedback and comments, we continue ouresearch effort and further discuss the findings with experts in the field.

Landrias presented their Smart Move project and conduct on-site survey to 80+ visitors.
